Shapam Kawkaban City

The city of Shapam Kawkaban is located 49 km to the northwest of Sana'a .According to historical references, the city was first established before the 7th century A.D, a fact that is verified by the inscriptions found in the locality. The city had flourished before the advent of Islam, but it never lost its significance during the Islamic era. It was named 'Shapam Ya'afar' after the name of "Al Ya'afar' who took it as the capital of their state their state between 847 and 997 A.D.

Although the location itself is strongly fortified , Al Ya'afar  were set on strengthening the fortifications of the city in addition to building palaces , mosques ,the souk and the old public lavatory . However, the most important of these building is the Grand Mosque which dates back to the 3rd century A.H. The Grand Mosque was built by the Ya'afari Emir ass'ad bin Abi Ya'afar .and retains its importance till our present day due to its well-preserved architectural and decorative elements, especially the wooden inscriptions made on the ceiling's wooden parts.

The souk is located in the city center and consists of a number of small shops, each of which specializes in a certain industry or commodity. A three –story building called 'Al Samsara' overlooks the souk's square. The Shampam Kawkaban is indeed one of those rare places that time seems to have left untouched, and where one can see the architectural, artistic and social characteristics of a real Islamic city in all its pristine purity.
